From The Field
Oí pessoal,
I made it to Utah! I'm here!
As soon as we got off of the plane it was like the gun was going off for a two-year race. We went straight from the airport to the mission home, where we ate dinner and went through a training/information session until about 9pm. You can imagine all 33 of us were pretty tired after a full day of travelling from places like Wyoming, California, or Vermont. I definitely had the easier end of that
Our mission president, President Evanson, and Sister Evanson seem to be really great people. They are from Alberta, CA and actually were over the Lovell Stake when President Evanson was an area seventy. Funny enough, he actually ate dinner with Elder Newman's family one time when he was down in Lovell.
We stayed in a hotel our first night, and the next morning, went to the mission office in Lindon, where we all sat in the chapel, a group of seasoned missionaries sitting behind us. One by one our names were read, followed by our trainers. Once we walked to the front of the chapel, we shook hands, snagged a quick picture, and headed out to the streets.
My trainer for the next six weeks is Georgia-native Elder Vess. I was the only Portuguese-speaking missionary in the new group, so I got the creme de la creme of the Utah Orem Mission Portuguese speakers. He's a great guy and is helping keep me in check.
My assignment is the Lehi, UT Gateway and Willow Park stakes, which basically means the two of us cover a crazy number of people. It also means there isn't a whole lot of free time to be had, which is just fine by me.
Our days are spent doing the normal exercise, personal study, language study, etc., lunch, M3's (where we go to members' homes and share a message about the Savior in 15 minutes or less), and contacting those who show interest in the Church.
I had the privilege of meeting an investigator that has been looking into the church for quite some time now and had been meeting with Elder Vess and his former companion prior to my being here. We extended an invitation for him to be baptized this weekend and he responded "yes!" He said he felt the warmth and peace of the Holy Ghost right after accepting, and he definitely wasn't the only one. It was such a strength to my testimony, and I am so incredibly excited for for him to have this amazing opportunity!
The people down here are so kind and giving. It's hard to not have a dinner scheduled with a family or have someone pay for your food when you grab lunch. Just about everywhere you go someone says "Hi Elders!" I really am in a wonderful place surrounded by wonderful people. I reckon that will make it hard if/when I head to Brazil, but I'm not worrying about that now. Instead, I'm focusing on the now and striving to make every day count!
"For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost"
1 Nephi 10:19
Love you all! I look forward to what the future will bring and hope to continue to grow into the servant the Lord needs me to be!
Com amor,
